9 Best Haircuts for Thin Hair

hair cuts for thin hair

Chopping your hair can instantly take years off your appearance. A choppy pixie cut is the perfect way to liven up your look, with several choppy layers that create thick-looking, dimensional hair. Collins says that the most common hair loss is often around the front of the hairline and temples. For that reason, soft face-framing layers will make sparse areas seem purposeful. He suggests styling hair with a soft wavy texture to create the illusion of volume. To get this amount of volume and shine, we recommend starting with Pattern Leave-In Conditioner.

#44: Little Blunt Blonde Bob with Shadow Root

From bobs and lobs to buns and braids, there are lots of looks to choose from for the appearance of fuller, thicker hair. Keep scrolling for 30 of the best haircuts and styles for thin hair. Following your hair growth patterns allows for the optical illusion of fuller hair by bringing the top of the crown and bangs forward with piecey textured layers. It’s a great style if you’re an older woman who wants to use only one or two products when styling. If you’re a woman over 40, try a shoulder-grazing layered style that will create a youthful, easy-going look. Cutting a long bob that grazes the shoulders pumps up your strands.

Trendy Octopus Cut with Balayage

"After shampooing and conditioning, apply a heat protector on damp hair," Hurtado says. "It reinforces a protective barrier to prevent breakage and breakage." However, most of us deal with damage at some point in our lives. From color treatments to heat styling, a number of factors can lead to weakened, less-than-shiny hair.

#71: Short and Layered A-Line Bob

It helps give volume and shape to your hair that’s otherwise sometimes more difficult to style. Be careful by adding too many layers to fine hair, as one could have areas that get too see-through. A done but undone long cut for women shows off an elegant vibe.

This hair tapers around the ears but has a length on top to give you fullness. Maintenance to keep this cut in good shape needs to be done every 4-6 weeks. If you ever want to grow it out again it’s easy to transform this cut into a cute bob on your way to long hair.

If body and volume are your goals and you prefer your strands long, you can simply ask your hairstylist to add a bit of texture on the ends. Think light, slightly feathered layers that don’t weigh your strands down. Cameron Diaz has perfected windblown waves, thanks to the subtly tapered ends of her cut.

A stacked bob is perfect for thin hair — after all, it's 360 degrees of full layers! Opt for side swept bangs, too, like actress Keira Knightley, to complete the tousled look. By foregoing a part and brushing her hair with plenty of volume, actress Meryl Streep shows us how to add dimension and lift without much effort. This style is proof that, even without any volume up top, a style can still make your tresses look thick. Here, volume is relegated to the mid-lengths and ends while a slick side-part adds drama.

#68: Chin-Length Blonde Bob with a Face Frame

Women with thin hair should consider getting bangs that are above the eyebrows. To keep the fullness around the sides, where you have lesser hair, you’ll need fewer layers, especially if your hairdresser has added a fade to the sides. Bangs for thin hair appear thinner if the length is longer than the chin added with several layers. Keeping more layers in the back will create fullness having more hair to work with.

The bangs help draw attention to facial features such as cheekbones or eyes. Add in a texturizing spray to help give movement, such as IGK’s Beach Club, to give a little more lift to the roots. Sport this chic, tousled version of a bowl cut to add a zesty flair to fine hair. Its dynamic blonde highlights enliven the classic shape, making it an exciting choice for a heart-shaped face. This style offers volume and ease, suitable for low-density locks. While the upkeep is simple, keep in mind the color contrast needs regular touch-ups.

Using a curling wand with a heat protection spray, you can achieve some soft waves. Mid-length layers allow texture and movement without taking away too much weight from your hair. Ask your stylist for the best length and layering that would suit you best. A modern shag hairstyle is a perfect style for ladies who need texture and movement when those tresses want to lay flat. Adding layers to a haircut creates movement and gives a great shape to your hair. When jazzing up, consider a sea salt spray such as Evo’s Salty Dog to create a cute beachy look.

You are sure to discover an array of inspiring solutions and styling hacks to add volume and texture to thin locks. A blonde pixie with bangs is an excellent choice for older ladies with thin hair. Layers and texture help to add fullness to the hair and bangs make a shorter cut a more feminine feel.

It’s ideal if you are looking to add fullness, volume, and texture to your long straight hair. The balayage will not only create an optical illusion of thickness, but the layers it will fill your thin hair with body and dimension. Celebrity hairstylist Paul Labrecuque recommends that those with thinning strands get a bob cut. “Bobs are perfect because they make one’s bottom look thick and not stringy, keeping density from roots to the ends of the hair,” he says.

Good hair stylists know tricks on how to make your thin hair appear thicker even in long haircuts. Choppy layers introduce texture, and the addition of bangs beautifully frames the face, contributing to a more voluminous look. By adding a bit of lowlights for some color, you can end up with this amazing transformation for medium-length hair. Gemma Chan's wavy half-up, half-down look helps add volume to hair via a slightly teased crown.

Whether you create them with a spritz of salt spray or by using a styling tool, these relaxed curls provide the illusion of thicker and more voluminous hair. Accentuate your bone structure with a cut that falls just below your chin. Complement this stylish short bob with stacked layers and long framing bangs. In terms of styling your haircut, use a round brush to lift hair at the roots for extra volume. Nothing says glamour like a thick and voluminous bouncy blowout, just look at Sydney Sweeney. The angle on January Jones's curved bob creates the illusion of fullness and body, even on straight hair.

A side-parted pixie cut paired with a soft fringe will give you a romantic glow that is super on-trend. I recommend a pixie if you struggle with flatness in your crown area. You will get the most lift and volume you never knew you could have. Your fine hair will come to life with a shaggy razored bob with a fringe. If you’re ready to get your hair chopped, a shaggy bob could be the fun shape you need. I recommend going to a razor-cutting specialist to achieve this hairstyle.

Plus, it’s perfect for those who prefer a hassle-free routine without compromising on style. The method is a technique where extensions (human hair or synthetic) are crocheted into hair to create locs. Starting your locs using the loc extension method results in instant locs. However, as your hair grows, the roots will take time to loc.

"The neat part to the side brings out your face shape," says Holdsworth. Others say that the options for these looks are limited. Short curls and coils are versatile enough to be braided, twisted, and wrapped into plenty of double tap-worthy styles. Growing natural locs cost you great patience, care and time. That is why many people are willing to wear locs but not willing to face the challenges and ugly phases of locs. This is the point for which the artificial or the locs extensions are developed and introduced in the market.

There are also plenty of easiest ways to style starter locs. Just remember to use the right tools and products to take care of them properly. When fully moisturized and the locking techniques are applied, the hair starts to develop short dreads. This method of hair locking will work on starter locks between one or two inches long.

So I’ve covered 5 simple methods you can do to start your dreadlock journey depending on what you’re looking for and what best suits your lifestyle. As long as you’re not choosing freeform locs, you’ll need retwists 1-2 times a month at the minimum. On the flip side, refrain from getting retwists too often. If you have three inches of hair to work with, you could employ the backcombing method. Backcombing is the process of holding a length of hair and combing towards the scalp instead of away. Gently backcombing your hair helps the follicles to become naturally intermingled and entangled.

The circular motions will encourage your hair to form tiny dread coils, perfect for starting your locs. Often the short natural hair relies on equipment like a dread sponge or a rat tail comb to achieve the desired hair twists coils. You will also need dread wax or super hold retwist gel for proper maintenance of coarse hair dreads. One shortcoming that comb coils have is that they’re essentially tailor-made for coarse, kinky hair.

Instead of combing away from your scalp, you grab some strands of hair and comb backward towards your scalp. If your hair is less than three inches long and naturally curly, its inherent length will shrink as you twist it. And if your hair is really short, your best option to start converting them into dreadlocks is via twisting them. Choosing the right method for starter locs for men depends on your hair type and preference.

The best part is, the two-strand twist style is a perfect way to create locs without having them constantly. This is a perfect starter loc men should try if they’re short on time and want to look stylish. The “palm rolling” style is a good choice for styling dreadlocks and starting them. With the Palm Rolling style you can easily re-shape and separate dreadlocks for an enhanced appearance without damaging them. Sponge on natural hair locks usually lasts for about a day without routinely using the sponge coil bush.

If you’re not a fan of dyeing your locs, how about accessorizing? ” is one of the most commonly asked questions when it comes to loc styles for short hair. A small splash of color can make a huge difference when it comes to loc styles for short hair. Protect the ends of your locs by wearing satin scarves or bonnets while sleeping. Friction from cotton pillowcases can cause damage and breakage to the delicate ends of your starter locs. Satin materials help retain moisture and reduce friction, allowing your locs to grow stronger.

From sisterlocs to freeform locs and more, choosing just which starter loc style to go with is one of the first things to think about when beginning a loc journey. When you have your natural hair of any texture at least 5 inches long, you can try starting locs with braids or plaits. If your scalp sweats a lot or you want to main your locs with interlocking, the braids locs are the best option for you.

There are a few things to keep in mind if you are considering this option. Starter locs do not have stages; they are one stage in your loc process, though you can use informal loc stages by month to help maintain your hair. Your locs can get thinner if your hair dries out or if oils build up inside them. If you can wash your scalp at least once a week and keep your locs clean, you should avoid thinning locs. However, some people have naturally thin or receding hair, so your locs may get thin through no fault of your own.

To create Bantu knots, start by sectioning off your hair into two-inch sections. Use a comb to detangle it and then use an oil-based moisturizer to ensure that your strands are hydrated and healthy. Have fun with them – they can be a great way to express your unique style. Not all parts of your head are good starting points for starter locs. The best place to start is typically near the nape of your neck. Once you have sectioned off your hair, you will need to start twisting it.

This style offers endless variations, making it both versatile and stylish. Mohawk locs are an edgy and bold style for women who want to make a statement. It is a dramatic departure from traditional loc styles that can be tailored to each individual’s personality and preference.

Two strand twists are also very easy to take out as the loose hairstyle can be removed with just water or your fingers. Remember, in shorter 2-inch hair, it’s best to palm roll in the same direction as your natural hair flow. You may need small hair clips to secure the hair up and separate.

What are the five stages of starter locs?

Once your hair is divided into small dreadlocks, you need to start twisting them. You can do this by using your fingers or a dreadlock brush. Oiling them once or twice a week should be fine, especially if you are cleaning your scalp adequately. Your scalp creates natural oils that will replenish and protect your locs. Just start twisting them together, and the hair follicles in both strands will start locking and fusing within a few months.

Start Your Locs by Backcombing

Involves sections of hair that are twisted using a comb. Let your hair dry for one to two hours now that they are moist with dreadlock gel. Use a hairdryer on the lowest power setting to expedite this process. Unfortunately, just because you want dreadlocks now does not mean that you can instantly have them. Not a few decades ago, the very act of wearing dreadlocks was seen as a provocative or socio-political thing to do.

Mini Twists Pixie

Note, these protective loc styles are perfect for people with looser curl hair texture. The loc braids and plaits prevent unraveling in the beginning loc stages for men with straight and mixed hair texture. For many people, growing starter locs will be just like a breeze. They can maintain the growth of locs with insignificant care and manipulation. And the fun part is their locs touches their shoulder before they know. Their Thin locks may break off and the buds may get untwisted constantly.

You should avoid touching them unless they are unraveling. Unless you’re going for the freeform look, you will want to cultivate your locs by grooming them regularly. You can retwist or palm roll every time you wash your hair or once per month. Don’t over-twist your locs, as it will weaken your roots over time. As your dreadlocks grow, you twist them enough so that the follicles at the scalp root stay individual and fine. Then, you use a crochet pick to thread the tip of one dreadlock strand through the loose follicles of the scalp.

Locs with beads can be a fun and stylish way to update your look. The addition of beads to locs is a beautiful way to showcase individuality and creativity, as well as add color and texture to your styling options. The ends are then left to hang freely, giving an elegant and exotic look.

What are the Best Loc Styles for Short Hair?

Styling starter locs are intended to be more of a protective style. This means that you will need to do little maintenance within your hair care routine. Beginner dreadlocks have become increasingly popular hairstyle in the past decade and for good reason! They’re easy to maintain, versatile, and they look great in combination with most haircut types. Like everyone, you surely want starter dreadlocks to be naturally fluffy, moveable, and healthy-looking.

Method 3- Interlocking

Folifort also helps to improve blood circulation, which is essential for fast short dread growth. Whether you've just gotten the big chop or short hair has been your signature for a while, there's no shortage of looks to try. "The teenage stage feels fun because you start to see the vision," Faulk says.

It's easier to have a little more length of hair to work with. “Sisterlocks don’t typically look like locs—they look like loose hair,” says Faulk. Starter locs are a great way to get started on your natural hair journey, and they can be a lot of fun, too.

Comb coils is a loc starter method where hair is twisted into coils. Over time, the ends of the loc will matt to help the entire loc form. Comb coils are usually used for short hair (less than two inches). You should consider the number of locs you want when starting your loc journey. Your loc count determines the level of maintenance and time commitments you may have to make to maintain your locs.

However, if you have the time, starter locs can be a great way to add some length and texture to your short hair. From there you would wait until your natural hair has grown out an inch before starting locs with short hair. This way your completed loc styles will look more uniform over time in both length and thickness. Once your natural hair is locked you will be able to enjoy indefinite beauty and stun. In most of the cases, the long hair is converted to locs with braids or plaits.

This is why it is extremely important to know which method is right not only for your aesthetic but also for your lifestyle. With the help of gel, heating bonnets, and clips, you can now achieve professional-looking retwists from the comfort of your own bedroom. These three essential tools are a total game-changer for anyone who prefers to do their own retwists.

Moreover, your hair care products (wrong selection of hair care products) may also be responsible for slow growth and delaying lock. Secondly, before you start your locs journey make yourself familiarize with the stages you have to go through. As we said earlier, these five stages are the starter, budding, teen, mature, and rooted. Most of the wearers of locs hairstyles finds the starting stage and the ending stage easier than the others. This is because you will have to face some really frustrating challenges in the middle stages of locs hairstyles.

Styling these starter locs have different forms, styles, and designs. At the time of starting locs you have a number of options in your hand to make these locs look beautiful and charming. If you are planning to have a locs hairstyle very recently, we assure you, you have landed just in place. The final look of comb coil locs depends on the person’s hair texture, density, and other factors. Typically stylists usually use comb coil locs for medium to large-sized locs rather than Sisterlocks or microlocs.

These locs have become increasingly popular among individuals with short hair. Whether you have straight, wavy, or curly hair, these locs can work wonders for various hair textures. Backcombing is a technique where knots are created on the hair shaft to encourage tangling and knots.

16 Best Sulfate-Free Shampoos for Healthy Hair in 2023

best sulfate free shampoo for colored hair

This sulfate-free shampoo is made without the typical ingredients found in most that make hair dull, negatively affect the tone and color of hair, or cause thinning or loss, says Fincher. If you're looking for a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner for your color-treated hair, the L'Oreal Paris Hair Care EverPure Volume Sulfate Free Shampoo & Conditioner Kit for Color-Treated Hair is a great option to consider. Overall, if you're looking for a sulfate-free shampoo that can help extend the vibrancy of your hair color, Nexxus Color Assure Shampoo is definitely worth considering. "When your hair gets wet, it swells and the hair shaft opens, and some color leaches out," says Schueller, who tested sulfates against other surfactants and didn't see a difference in terms of fading color. With that being said, color-treated hair will notice a difference in increased moisture when switching over to sulfate-free shampoo.

L'Oréal Paris EverPure Blonde Sulfate-Free Shampoo

Ideal for anyone who wants to boost the volume on their limp locks, this relies on strengthening biotin and plumping collagen to do exactly that. It imparts plenty of lift at the roots almost instantly but is also great at breaking down any built-up residue from leftover styling products. And that’s super important for the fine-haired set since all of that gunk can end up weighing hair down even more—the last thing you want. We conducted hours of research on the best sulfate-free shampoos you can get at the drugstore, evaluating formulas on how effectively they cleansed hair as well as the scent and any extra features of each shampoo. Our team then combined these results with stylist-recommended picks to create this list. When washing color-treated hair, opt for lukewarm water instead of hot water.

We also love that it has a nozzle tip so you can get right to your roots with the formula. For platinum blondes who loathe warm undertones, you'll want a purple shampoo (check out our guide to using purple shampoos here). These cancel out yellow hues in blond, so your hair is the light, silvery blond of your dreams. This high-pigment number also includes antioxidant-rich hibiscus extract and strengthening silk amino acids. A safe bet for those with color-treated hair is to opt for repairing shampoos (look for buzzwords like "damage," "strengthening," and so on). We particularly love the plant-derived squalane and hemisqualane, which are natural silicone alternatives that not only give hair that silky slip but improve the health in the process.

The term ‘sulfate-free’ has become a buzzword because it carries a lot of expectations and is preferred by most of us now. Irrespective of your hair type, sulfate-free shampoos offer color protection without stripping off your scalp’s natural oils and causing dry scalp. To infuse life into colored hair, opt for the NEXXUS Color Assure Long Lasting Vibrancy Shampoo. The PUREOLOGY PROFESSIONAL COLOR CARE Strength Cure Shampoo, a vegan formula, strengthens hair strands. The LOVEbeauty AND planet Murumuru Butter & Rose Blooming Color Sulfate-Free Shampoo protects and softens hair. Those with color-treated hair also rely on these products to prevent the hair color from fading away while maintaining its vibrancy and reducing hair loss.

Olaplex is recognized by many stylists as the leader when it comes to hair repair. Their patented hair-care system helps to repair the disulfide bonds in hair follicles that give your hair structure, strength, and stability. When those bonds are broken, your hair becomes damaged, which is where Olaplex’s patented ingredient, Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate, comes to the rescue.

While there’s no Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants product for hair care, the Native Moisturizing Shampoo comes close. The clean formula works well across a spectrum of hair types to give you a sleeker, shinier mane. Kind of like the RX Bars of shampoo, Native only contains 10 easy-to-understand ingredients. We appreciate that the brand creates its simple formula by thoughtfully choosing plant-derived sources and safer alternatives to harsh ingredients.

Not quite a shampoo, not quite a co-wash, this creamy cleanser is like a hug for dry strands of all types, from straight to coily. Hydrate and nourish your curls while you cleanse with this ultra-hydrating shampoo from Pattern Beauty. The creamy formula is sulfate-free (duh) and infused with coconut oil, honey, and aloe vera.

Between color treatments, hot tools, environmental stressors, and more, our hair gets worn and torn, and the first thing to go is its ability to retain moisture. SheaMoisture's sulfate-free shampoo aids strands in absorbing moisture, while raw shea butter, argan oil, and sea kelp repair breakage. Did you know that washing your hair too much with certain shampoos could cause stripping of natural oils? This sulfate-free shampoo won't strip away essential oils or fade pigmentation! Featuring organic awapuhi extract to balance moisture levels and create natural luster, this rich wash also repairs dry, brittle strands.

The Aveeno Blackberry Quinoa Protein Blend Shampoo has a wholesome balance of nourishing ingredients that also calm your scalp. Its star ingredient, oats, keeps your scalp health intact and free from any irritation. Multiple reviewers have praised the soothing effects of its rich lather on the scalp. Also, the rich mixture of blackberry and quinoa helps prevent your chemically treated hair color from fading.

Start by looking for "a purple pigmented shampoo made specifically to brighten yellow blondes or grays," Du recommends. This will help counteract any brassiness (unwanted orange undertones), common from hard water or product deposits, and keep your hair color vibrant. "Going back to the color wheel, purple neutralizes yellow and orange," she explains. Just like blondes, brunettes and redheads can benefit from using color-specific shampoos, those with gray and silver hair are no exception. Gray hair, since it lacks pigment and can be coarser, needs a little extra TLC to keep it shiny and healthy. "Gray hair typically has a yellow hue to it, so adding a cool color (like purple) can make it look whiter and brighter," explains Michael Dueñas, celebrity hair stylist and founder of Veluer Creative.

But I'm fully obsessed with this clean shampoo from Roz (created by celebrity hairstylist extraordinaire Mara Roszak). It makes my hair feel very soft, but definitely cleanses my greasy roots too, thanks to a blend of medium-strength surfactants and moisturizing ceramides. I can only imagine a better hair day when Roszak herself is doing my hair, tbh. The culprit of your stripped pigment could be your current shampoo, especially if it contains sulfates (which we'll dive deeper into). Below, check out our favorite color protection shampoos that gently cleanse without stripping pigment in the process.

The 19 Best Sulfate-Free Shampoos of 2024

Before GH, she worked on Insider's style and beauty reviews vertical, where she evaluated skincare, makeup, haircare and more. She flexes her research and reporting skills by working closely with the experts in the Beauty Lab to put together product reviews on the very best haircare out there, according to consumer and Lab testing. Because of the color options available, I would say it’s best for dark brown and red hair colors.

Best Shampoos for Color-Treated Hair, Tested by Experts

Suitable for all hair types, it is also safe to use on keratin treated hair and extensions. We conducted research on the best shampoos for colored hair and got to work testing them out on blondes, reds, brunettes and every shade in between. We evaluated each option on their active ingredients, texture, value and targeted results.

Best for Oily Hair

Purple shampoos cleanse the hair (to an extent) but also cancel out unwanted yellow tones and brassiness by depositing purple pigment, according to our experts. Believe it or not, color theory is a big part of finding the right color-depositing shampoo for you — you want to pick the opposite color on the color wheel for your hair. In general, blondes should use purple shampoo, redheads should use green and brunettes should choose a blue shampoo. Whether you're addicted to heat-styling or your hair is naturally unruly, Kérastase's Bain Fluidealiste has you covered. It provides fluidity and anti-frizz benefits, leaving strands sleek and shiny. As Hepworth tells us, "Ouai smells amazing, like I wish I can buy it in a matching perfume. The Detox formula is also great for summer, especially when my hair gets greasy faster."

Best Clean

"[It's] very light and leaves your hair bouncy and shiny. You do not need to use a lot each time you wash your hair, so one bottle goes a long way," says one reviewer. Ouai’s sulfate-free gel formula is suitable for all hair types—straight, wavy, curly, and textured. If frizz is a concern, this shampoo will be your BFF, since ingredients like kumquat fruit extract and coconut oil work to strengthen split ends and damaged hair, restoring shine and strength. I can't believe I'm saying this as a beauty editor with 5+ years of experience but...I'm new to sulfate-free shampoos. Sulfates are strong surfactants that help break down oils, product buildup, and grime on your scalp, and because my hair is super oily, I've typically always gravitated towards these sudsy shampoos on wash day.

Best for curly hair

Whether you have dry, dandruff-prone, fine, oily, curly, gray, thinning, or color-treated hair, here are the best sulfate-free shampoos to suit your hair type. The Lotus Flower Extract in the formula helps to infuse hair with luminous shine and lasting volume, making it a great option for those with fine, flat hair. However, the smell of the shampoo and conditioner may not be pleasant for some users, and the shampoo may not lather as much as other shampoos. Additionally, the price of the product may be a bit higher compared to other sulfate-free shampoos. We've personally used Nexxus Color Assure Shampoo and found that it does a great job of cleansing color-treated hair without stripping the color.

Drying alcohol, petroleum, and mineral oil are a few ingredients you should steer clear from. They can cause dry and brittle hair, resulting in dullness which affects hair styling. Look for a dermatologist-approved or specialist-approved formula for a sensitive scalp. Always check the shampoo’s label to see if it is specially formulated for color-treated hair.

Those with naturally oily hair know all too well the feeling of washing your hair in the morning only to have it turn greasy by the evening. This shampoo has been specially designed to cleanse excess oil from the scalp to maximize how long your roots stay clean for, therefore reducing how often you need to wash your hair. The mint leaf inside this shampoo not only smells incredible, but it also helps remove excess oil (both from the hair and scalp) and leaves a deeply cooling sensation.

And if you’re a brunette with blonde highlights, purple shampoo can help maintain the vibrancy of your highlights,” he says. If you want to strengthen your hair while you bust brass, this purple shampoo is formulated with quinoa protein and cactus flower extract to prevent breakage and seal the cuticle, leading to stronger hair. The rich violet pigments also help your blonde look as fresh as possible. Since some purple shampoos can be drying, Redken’s is formulated with a protein complex to help strengthen hair and increase elasticity. If you want your hair icy blonde, you can leave it on for up to five minutes and use it more frequently.

Our team appreciates the fast-acting power that this purple shampoo provides and we hope you will, too. Leave it to Augustinus Bader to create a luxe lightweight and vegan shampoo that does more than just gently cleanse. The watercress shikakai and maca root blend creates a strengthening formula that helps reduce breakage all while boosting thickness and shine, as supported by the brand's clinical studies. Meanwhile, the brand’s Trigger Factor Complex (aka TFC8) purports to tackle everything from frizz to shedding to nourishing your locks with amino acids, vitamins and peptides.

A must-have for coily, kinky, and tight curls, this moisturizing shampoo creates the perfect lather so you can gently reactivate your natural curl pattern and texture – without any harsh surfactants, of course. If your hair is screaming S.O.S, then it may be time to pull out the stronger stuff. For major damage control, opt for this sulfate-free shampoo, which works to nourish your hair with moisture, strength, and manageability in every wash. Then this sulfate-free pick will do just the trick, thanks to its vegan keratin formula that helps seal, reinforce, and smooth the hair cuticle. If you've got a full head of relentless frizzies, this gentle formula will smooth them right out.

We fell in love with these quartzite countertops as soon as we saw them in the stone yard. We loved that they have the look of marble, but are more durable and more resistant to stains and etching. It was important to us to have a very open concept living space where the whole family can gather.

The majority of my walls are painted in Sherwin Williams Repose Gray. When the house was being built, the walls were sprayed with sprayers by our painters and as far as we know they were painted 100% repose gray. HOWEVER, when we purchased a touch up of the paint and painted a few areas, the touch up paint was a bit darker than our walls. So we took a sample of the actual paint from our walls to the Sherwin Williams store and they confirmed our suspicions… We actually have 50% Repose Gray throughout the house. I will continue to update this post as we complete each space.

Our floors were purchased from Kentwood Floors and the color is called Oak Iron Springs (Wild Thing). My countertops are a natural stone called Quartzite. We LOVE our counters and would choose them again if given the chance. And we have not had any staining or scratching issues at all with our counters. There have been a few etches from acidic liquid, but have had some luck buffing them out and they are not noticeable at all.

Erin is passionate about decorating on a budget and loves to share tips and ideas! She believes that you don’t have to break your budget to have a stylish home that you love!! Her belief in having affordable, stylish design led her to create the My Texas House line of products. I have always loved the look of white painted brick on old homes. We chose this white colored brick as an alternative to painted brick. I wanted that farmhouse style look with the dark stained wood shutters and light colored brick and stone.

I’m going to share photos of each completed room in our house. At the end of the post, I will share paint colors and any other details I have about the house, as well as the products (decor, rugs, lighting, and furniture) that can be found in my house. This isn’t an exhausted list to each space in our home. Head to my Shop Page for a complete list of sources for each space. I probably took the most time designing this space.

The 5 Best Smart Ceiling Fans for Your Home in 2024

ceiling light design

These are a very energy efficient type of luminaire bulb that was designed to replace the incandescent bulb. They have been shown to be up to 75% more energy efficient than incandescents. However, they are slowly being phased out as well for LED bulbs by consumers. When it comes to overhead lighting, there are a few accessibility concerns to keep in mind.

Create ambience

The light cast by a shade suspension, pendant or even a small chandelier can tend to be too dim on its own, resulting in poor lighting. However, paired with a table or wall lighting this adds to a layered effect that can be built on when needed, meaning you do not need to compromise on a beautiful and key design feature in the room. As beautiful as it is, glass might not be the right ceiling light material to choose in your living room. If you’re after something with more of an inherent warmth, going for natural materials will be a better bet. Design experts wish you would reconsider, pause, and look up to all the possibilities of this oft-neglected yet key element of home design or renovation. “The interplay between the ceiling covering and the walls redirect the viewer’s sight lines up and around the space, making it feel more engaging,” she adds.

Utility Lighting

Another benefit of pendant lighting is there is no single style for them. However, one central ceiling light alone often does not provide enough illumination and can create shadows in a room. Avoid large fixtures when lighting low ceilings from above as they can make the room feel even more squat and often create dark spots where the illumination is inconsistent. Ceiling, or pendant lights are the best option for a bedroom, and they work particularly well when you have a high ceiling as they 'bring' the light down so to speak. There’s a new trend emerging that seeing a pair of ceiling lights being hung above bedside tables instead of in the middle, we like it as it’s more directional and useful.

They are relatively inexpensive and easy to install, so if you’re putting in a new illumination fixture, adding a dimmer switch at the same time makes sense. A semi-flush installation with an opaque shade will shine radiance on the floor and ceiling, while a translucent shade will cast radiance in every direction. The wiring of the light runs from the ceiling through the base and the rod or bar and terminates in a light socket. These light sockets often rotate to help aim or direct the light, but sometimes they are fixed in place.

You can add your essential oils or fragrances to the top to help disperse a more aromatic scent. In fact, in the right scheme, it can make a wonderful addition to a bedroom. 'Aim for a mix of traditional and contemporary styles within a home,' says Luke Thomas, John Cullen Lighting. “Consider the height of the ceiling and scale of the room,” Pratt says, elaborating that only styles, objects, and patterns that complement and enhance the space should be implemented. “For example, we would not suggest a coffered ceiling in an 8' space, but perhaps a pattern of lines or woven texture to enhance it more, making it feel higher,” she says.

If you are looking to set a relaxing mood, like for a bedroom or a cozy living room, you should look into light fixtures that incorporate fabric. Track lighting, on the other hand, is a strip installed into the ceiling. Instead of sockets that a bulb can be screwed into, the entire strip functions like a socket.

Industrial-Style Ceiling Lights

Semi-flush lights are a good alternative as they look good and can provide optimal light when mounted on ceilings that are 8 to 10 feet high. The ceiling light fixtures you decide to install should suit the room’s general mood and make it a place that you want to either relax or work in. To help you come to a more informed decision, we’ve compiled this design guide to the common types of ceiling lights. You can find incredible light fixtures that come in minimalist designs and modern materials like steel, glass and ceramic and in various color combinations that complement the style of the room. You must decide what illumination you need to choose the right ceiling luminaire for your room. For example, you could have a wide flush light fixture in the middle of your ceiling and just mount a few pendant lights in specific areas as task lighting.

When there is no space between the ceiling and the luminaire, it is called a flush light. The functionality of your room will be affected by the lighting in the room, so you need to be careful when you choose the type of ceiling lights to install. Think about what kind of atmosphere you are trying to create and what types of activities you want to do while staying in that room. Of course, your ceiling lighting doesn’t have to be a showstopping affair – keeping it simple and stylish can be just what a living room needs. Consider how you might use living room ceiling lighting ideas to zone the space. Pendant lights are great for creating a focal point usually in the center of the room or highlighting a significant seating zone, such as the one in this example, situated in a separate nook.

You could also try having a chandelier in the middle of the room and recessed lights placed at strategic points around the room to add some illumination to areas where the chandelier’s light doesn’t reach as well. Pendant lighting and chandeliers are also great ways to take advantage of the space provided by rooms with high ceilings. You can put an LED bulb into any luminaire and (depending on how often you use it) not need to change it for decades. This makes it a perfect fit for ceiling lights, which often require a ladder to reach.

ceiling light design

Some metal ceiling lights incorporate glass and geometric shapes, showcasing different colors. Metal can also be used for a minimalistic and clean aesthetic, appealing for the living room, dining room, or even the bedroom. As we pointed out above, flush light fixtures don’t work well in ceilings above 8 feet.

As the lamp supports Apple HomeKit, it also appeared in the Apple Home app, where I could control it along with my other connected HomeKit devices. You won’t be able to access as many detailed settings as are available in the Aqara app, but you can control the light with Siri voice commands if you want to. The white inner part of the lamp has separate elements to display cool and warm tones of white light, allowing you to adjust the glow to your own preferences. But when you switch the T1M on, you’ll immediately realize that this is no ordinary lamp.
